Having already been featured on Forbes as ‘Ones to Watch’ regarding chic sustainable fashion, Sentenced are fast becoming the hottest brand to look out for this coming season!
QP Magazine sat down with the designers, Lucy Graham and Georgia Wilkinson to talk all things Fashion and Celebrity:
- How did you start in fashion?
Sentenced was established by Georgia Wilkinson & Lucy Graham in 2019 and launched just under a year later in 2020, during the pandemic. Sentenced was launched with a mission to bring back quality over quantity; buy better and buy less. The two of us share the same values as well as the love for design and creativity. Even as children we knew the fashion industry is where we wanted to be and we’ve made every effort to get to where we are now. We both have had our own experiences in the industry, Georgia has an Honours degree & experience at a luxury atelier, showcasing her work at Paris Fashion Week; Lucy developed her eponymous label whilst travelling in Bali, using sustainable & organic fabrications.
- What is your favourite part of being a fashion designer?
We love to see the process through from concept to finished product and see the final campaign imagery. It’s a really rewarding feeling seeing all the amazing women in our pieces and knowing that the whole process was worth it. Having the ability to be truly creative and creating something unique yet responsible is so important to us. Sentenced is a step away from fast fashion & towards a cleaner, healthier future.
- What inspires you to create amazing collections season after season?
We are both inspired by a multitude of things! Lucy finds inspiration in previous decades such as the Eighties and silhouettes and prints synonymous with that period. Georgia is inspired by objects and the beauty in every day; the juxtaposition is what influences the designs. The silk Blair dress & co-ordinating Bibi hoodie are a synthesis of our personal styles & influences. We create cohesive collections by focusing our influences on specific areas, we source materials that complement our designs, add texture to our pieces & bring our collections to life.
- How would you define the Sentenced woman?
Sentenced is inclusive and for women who are conscious of doing their bit for the environment. The Sentenced woman is cool, sexy, and one-of-a-kind.
- Who is on your wish list to dress?
We would love to see Rihanna in our pieces, there’s so many cool and powerful women we would love to dress! It makes us so happy to see women wearing our pieces and how beautiful they look!
- Where do you see yourself in the next ten years?
We see Sentenced becoming a driving force for change in the fashion industry, helping others to see the importance in being sustainable yet unique. We have so many things we wish to achieve & also a lot in the pipeline. Our next collection will be launching shortly, we hope will you join & follow us on this journey for the Season Two and future collections.
- If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before beginning your career, what would it be?
Work hard! Everyone you meet & every experience you have shapes your future. Continue to improve yourself, you’re never done learning.
- How is working in fashion different today than from when you started out?
Sentenced launched during the pandemic so we have had to adapt daily to the changing circumstances, we’ve experienced delays in deliveries due to Covid-19 & Brexit but we have dealt with these and adapted. As a fairly new brand we entered into an already very different industry, so we are excited to see where the brand can go in the future.
- What role do you think social media plays in fashion today?
Social media plays a huge part in all aspects of fashion, from designer inspiration to how people style the finished products. The marketing aspect of social media continues to expand and nowadays it is crucial brands have strong content, slick branding and a cohesive image to engage their audience. Sentenced shows a mixture of product and lifestyle shots to give their audience a strong brand message.
- How do you want women to feel when wearing your clothes?
We want them to feel empowered and beautiful. The female body is art and we love to dress women in clothing that is individual, high-quality & kind to the environment.
